Founded in 1946, this organization was developed to promote sports in general, those who participate in athletic endeavors and those who lend their time and talents in support of those efforts.
Monthly meetings, with a designated sports-figure as speaker, occur on the 3 rd Monday at noon at Elizabeth Manor Country Club.
The annual jamboree hosts a nationally recognized sports figure as speaker. The Portsmouth.
The Portsmouth Sports Foundation
Created in 1991, the foundation was created to sustain an endowment for the purpose of awarding scholarships in the name of the Portsmouth Sports Club to deserving student-athletes from the Portsmouth area.

Awards and Recognitions
Abe Golblatt Memorial High School Coach of the Year
We recognize the high school coach for outstanding achievements by the presentation of this award. It is named after. Abe Goldblatt, a sports writer for the Virginian-Pilot newspaper for 63 years. Abe covered countless sporting assignments until his death in 1994. Abe was a longtime member of the Sports Club who was loved by many and jested by a few for his creative ways of “not” spending money while poking fun at himself.
Clarence Ace Parker High School Athletic Award of Excellence Male and Female
Clarence “Ace” Parker was voted the most versatile and greatest athlete ever from Hampton Roads. A Portsmouth native, “Ace” lettered in five sports at Woodrow Wilson High School and went on to play football, basketball, and baseball at Duke University. In 1937, Ace played professional baseball with the Philadelphia Athletics, and in the same year, played in the NFL with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He had many accomplishments in his NFL career including the NFL’s Most Valuable player in 1940. Ace later went on to become a member of the NFL Hall of Fame in 1972.
Ace was an active member of the Sports Club until his death in 2013 at the age of 101.
J. H. Jerbert Simpson Memorial Award
J. Herbert Simpson is credited with the formation of the Portsmouth Sports Club in 1946. The Club was organized to promote sports in general and to recognize the achievements of local individuals in athletics. Each year, the Club recognizes an individual for the contributions to sports and athletics in the community with the J. Herbert Simpson Sports Person of the Year.
